In class Mise en scene “The Shining” draft

In the horror film The Shining, both method acting and impersonation acting are portrayed. Danny, the child of Jack and Wendy Torrance uses impersonation acting. He is a child and all his role is is to act as a child would in these situations. Apparently Stanley Kubrick, the director, shot his scenes as such so that the actor playing Danny did not realize that he was in a horror film. However, Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duval, who play Danny’s parents are method acting. Thankfully enough, neither of them are crazy in real life so they must act as if they really are driven to insanity or hysterics. The styles of acting are not in conflict- in fact they work better together. It would be unrealistic to expect either Nicholson or Duvall to actually act the way their characters do in real life or that Danny should try and empathize or put himself in the place of another child his age.
